Earlier today Cheryl Cole premiered her brand new single on Radio 1 with Nick Grimshaw.
Crazy Stupid Love is her first solo single in two years, that were occupied by a short-lived Girls Aloud reunion and a new X Factor deal.
Cheryl’s return was only announced a few days ago, leaving very little time for commentators to speculate on the sound or direction of her new material: will it be another Calvin Harris floor-filler like Call My Name or a traditional pop song like Fight For This Love?
Well, Crazy Stupid Love sounds like no other Cheryl Cole single we’ve had before. Perhaps revisiting Girls Aloud’s quirky music during their brief reunion inspired Cheryl to stay away from radio trends this time around.
The funky, horn-friendly single is a solid pop song that surprisingly relies more on Cheryl’s vocals than the EDM beats behind it. Vocally, she sounds stronger and more confident than ever before – to the point where Tinie Tempah‘s appearance feels unnecessary.
Cheryl is set to perform the song for the first time this Saturday on the Britain’s Got Talent finale (June 7), with its Colin Tilley-directed music video premiering on VEVO two days later (June 9). She’s ready to reclaim her crown as the UK’s leading lady.
Crazy Stupid Love will be released in the UK on July 20, with Cheryl’s fourth solo album (which features collaborations with Nicola Roberts, Greg Kurstin and Sia (!!!)) set to drop this autumn.
