A few days ago, M.I.A released a trailer for what seemed to be an upcoming documentary chronicling her life and upbringing. However, following a statement released from filmmaker Steve Loveridge, it was actually the original teaser sent to the Sri Lankan rapper’s label Interscope Records prior to its scheduled release date last year.
For unknown reasons, Interscope Records and M.I.A’s management Roc Nation shelved the project – which featured Kanye West, Diplo and Jimmy Iovine to name a few – and have since blacklisted the project. Almost immediately after the 37-year-old leaked the documentary teaser online it was removed, but it has now resurfaced.
Since the teaser brought the documentary’s existence to people’s attention, the rapper’s fans and critics alike have been begging for the project to see the light of day – including Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts. Although, this now seems unlikely as filmmaker Loveridge has revealed he would “rather die” than complete the project as the process has been so stressful.
