Today marked the day that Jay Z‘s twelfth studio was made available for download to Samsung customers that downloaded the Jay Z Magna Carta mobile app – and, as expected, the album has soon after leaked onto the internet in its entirety.
The album has not been preceded by any single releases or promotion, but due to the 43-year-old rapper’s legendary status the collection has been highly-anticipated since it was announced just 3 weeks ago. Due to this, listeners are in the dark of what the rapper had in store – but it further adds to the concept album being appreciated as one whole piece of work rather than separated into 2 categories of “singles” and “fillers”. The album of course has its better tracks, but for once Jay Z has delivered a truly cohesive album with its conceptual approach.
‘Magna Carta… Holy Grail‘ features production from Timbaland, Pharrell, Boi-1cda, Mike Dean and Mike WiLL (to name a few) and includes numerous of collaborations. Jay has collaborated with Frank Ocean, Justin Timberlake and his beloved wife Beyoncé on the 16-track set – Mrs. Carter has uncredited appearances on numerous tracks (‘Tom Ford‘, ‘Picasso Baby‘) in addition to her feature on ‘Part II (On The Run)‘. Miley Cyrus even has the honour of being mentioned by HOV on the track ‘Somewhereinamerica‘; ‘Somewhere in America Miley Cyrus is still twerking / Twerk, twerk, Miley, twerk‘.
Opening track ‘Holy Grail‘ – featuring Justin Timberlake – sets the mood for the album with Timbaland sampling Nirvana‘s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit‘ on the reflective track. The rapper uploaded the track to his official Life+Times SoundCloud account, hinting that this will be the first track to be given the single treatment – radio stations around the world are already spinning it after just a few hours.
