In the early hours of this morning, Jay-Z surprised all music fans around the world by announcing he is releasing his twelfth studio album in a matter of weeks.
The Roc Nation mogul has teamed up with Samsung for the exciting project – for a reported $20 million – which will see his twelfth album, christened ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail‘, released on July 4.
On July 4, ‘Magna‘ will be available for free download to the first one million Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note II users who download the co-branded Google Play app. Following this exclusive release, the album will then be released in the more traditional format of digital download and CD on July 7.
Whilst the project is being announced 3 weeks before release, it is definitely not rushed. The strategy of pairing up with a global brand as influential and convenient as Samsung gives Mr. Carter the opportunity to grow his fanbase, which is a rarity for an artist that has been around for 17+ years.
With no album artwork, tracklisting or lead single announced thus far, I suspect that these key components to the album will be unwrapped via Samsung in a similar fashion to the album release itself. The project was unveiled to the public when Samsung released a commercial featuring Jay-Z speaking about the inspiration behind the new release, and the release strategy.
The commercial also features producers Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Rick Rubin and Swizz Beatz which pretty much confirms that they have contributed to the new material. Watch “Inside ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail‘ with JAY Z + Samsung” below:
This project is truly inspiring. Usually when an artist is at the stage of releasing their twelfth studio album the public have begun to lose interest, despite their sometimes legendary status (see Madonna‘s ‘MDNA‘). Whereas, with Jay-Z, he is embracing new developments and changes within the industry to create innovative and well-executed projects. Next week it will be 17 years since the rapper released his debut album ‘Reasonable Doubt‘, yet ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail‘ is set to be his biggest release yet.
If only Mrs. Carter would take notes and use her major sponsorships – Pepsi – to release her own highly-anticipated new material to fans in such an epic way as her husband’s.
It’s safe to say we are excited. How do you feel?
